Terms and conditions

Why have terms and conditions?

It comes from the nature of Usenet. ISPs don't get to choose what's posted to Usenet, and we don't do any filtering, with gigabytes of stuff per day, no-one can check everything. Anyone can post anything. Think of it as like the telephone service; the phone company just provides the wires; what the wires carry isn't their responsibility (this is called "common carrier").

Likewise this news service. We just provide an access point to what exists already on a huge number of other computers.

So first of all, you need to be of the legal age of consent in your location to be able to view this stuff. If you don't know what age is old enough, ask your parents. If they don't know, consult a legal professional. In most locations, if you're old enough to vote, then you're old enough.

Secondly, don't believe everything you read and see. People sometimes tell lies! For example, a picture might be advertised as "Bare feet" and actually it's a kettle. Why? Some people play jokes, some people are trying to deceptively sell things. Often, pictures are used as a way to persuade you to visit a web site, and when you go there, you find that the web site isn't what you expected.

When you click on a thumbnail or a file name, you are requesting to your computer, that your browser fetches a stream of bytes from this server, and displays it on your screen. If you don't like what you see, it was your action in clicking that caused it. The news server won't send you anything without you clicking to request it. If you're offended by it, then you shouldn't have clicked on it.

Why do we charge for this access? For the same reason that AOL, Compuserve, MSN and ten thousand other ISPs charge for access. It costs us money to provide this service - telecoms, computer hardware, and it all has to be paid for somehow.

There's a *lot* of stuff on Usenet. If you try, you can get a hundred gigabytes per day. We're providing this service for individuals, for their personal use. The restriction is that no single person can download more than 250mb in any one day. With a 56k modem, that's a great many hours solid downloading.

If you do see anything that you regard as illegal, then you can email us at newsadmin@slowdive.newsatron.com. We can take it off this news server, if you give the exact URL address that you saw it. But it's still on tens of thousands of other servers around the world, and we can't do anything about those. If you want something done, you can contact all those other ISPs.

Do not spam the newsgroups. Spam is when you post the same thing a lot of times, or to a lot of different newsgroups. The content of what you post isn't relevant, the only relevant thing is the number of times you post. If you aren't sure what is and is not spam, please find out.

If you have a complaint about copyright material on the newsgroups, please read this

You must not give your access code to anyone else. If you do, then you'll lose access.

If you find these terms and conditions restrictive, then don't use this service
