Copyright complaints

Some of the copyright complaints that are sent, are about something that the complainant posted to a newsgroup, without realising that this action would cause the item posted to be copied to tens of thousands of news servers all round the world. Here is an introduction to how Usenet works.

If you would like to complain about something that you have posted yourself, then possibly you did not understand when you posted it, that in making that posting you were copying it to an indefinite number (more than 10,000) of News Servers around the world. Every time you post to a newsgroup, what you post is copied to all these servers. If you give us a precise identification of what you posted, then we may at our discretion, remove it from this server. If you wanted to send something to a small group of people, you might consider using email, or setting up a small web site and email the address to the group.

If you believe that your work has been posted to one or more of the newsgroups by someone unauthorised to do so and that this is copyright infringement, please send us a written notice (e-mail is enough) that complies with the Online Copyright Infringement Liability Limitation Act and includes the following information:

  1. Identification of the copyrighted work claimed to have been infringed
  2. Identification of the material that you claim infringes the copyrighted work you identified above, and that you seek to have removed or the access to which you want disabled.
  3. A description that identifies where the infringing material is located. This description must be sufficient to allow us to readily locate the material. For example, you could give the URL address.
  4. A statement by you that you have a good faith belief that the disputed use is not authorized by the copyright owner or its agent.
